Sound Spaces
Sound spaces is an installation designed to use a two-dimensional wall of sound to create three-dimensional landscapes and stories.
The installation consisted of eight individual sound paintings, played in succession, as well as an accompanying zine to help give a glimpse into the composition of the sounds (this is something I often include in my art - I enjoy breaking the fourth wall and sharing part of the process). I used an array of eight speakers to position and move specific sounds to create great detail of mood and space. The minimalist visual presentation of Sound Spaces helps the listener focus on the auditory experience.
I experimented with field recordings, broken tape players, unusual microphone techniques and radical volume dynamics to test the edges of viable recording practices. The abstract and emotional content of sounds was more important than being on the beat or in tune. I was creating a place to be, not a song.
